Episode 60 – Playing for Ballet Variations

This episode is a round table discussion with all of the team, and is shorter than the usual length of podcast.

It details playing for variation class at vocational school level, something quite important for ballet pianists, if you choose to work in that area of the industry.

This podcast involves discussion about how variations are tackled and what you need to know about the variation in terms of context, in order to play successfully.  It also becomes a frank discussion about the historical context of playing for variations and how they have evolved musically over the years, as ballets have involved.

The demands on the music have become more so as technique and physical abilities have advanced, and one could argue that the music has become subservient to the dance.
